This is a full and exciting week! In addition to Red Ribbon Week, we also have a school-wide mock election. Middle school will vote on Wednesday, so be ready to cast your vote!
Last week, a letter came home with due dates for our current unit. We are reading Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury. Students were given a packet along with the letter and due dates. This week, on Thursday 10/27, they have a One of a Kind character study sheet that is due from their packet, and the Prologue-Chapter 7 questions are due on Friday. They are strongly encouraged not to wait until the last minute to begin working on these assignments. We will have a test next Wednesday over vocabulary and events covered in the book.

8th grade is busy studying the Horror genre of literature. This week, we will begin our first novel for the year: Something Wicked This Way Comes. It is a fabulous classic by Ray Bradbury, and one of my personal favorites.
Students will be given a packet that we will be using for this unit along with a checklist of due dates. Please make sure that you receive this as well, and are aware of the dates and assignments ahead of time. Most of them can not be done in one evening, so it is important to stay ahead of the dates. As with all of our work, the 3 day grace period applies, but no extensions will be given. Please remember that report card letters are due back to homeroom teachers by Tuesday, October 18th! Parent compact letters are due back no later than October 27th. Odyssey's Fall Festival is this Saturday, October 22 at Odyssey. If you have not sent in your 8th grade basket donations, please do so ASAP. The money made from the basket goes directly to 8th grade, so please keep that in mind. I appreciate all of the donations that have been received already. We have so much going on right now at Odyssey!!
On Monday, we had a visit from author J Scott Savage. He spent some time talking to middle school about his books and about how to create a story. I think the group really enjoyed his presentation. Fall Festival is coming up soon!! Please send in basket items ASAP. 8th grades basket theme is "Date Night." If you have any questions or need suggestions, let me know. We will have a test on Wednesday over "The Tell-Tale Heart." Students have enjoyed reading and analyzing the weird darkness that is Edgar Allan Poe. Last week, we wrote a profile of the narrator, and I have really enjoyed seeing the creativity of the students in their writing. Essay grades are in! Students have an opportunity to make corrections and turn them in for additional points. Please make sure they take advantage of this opportunity! Corrections are due on Wednesday, October 5. |
